It all happened from March this year.

I was cleaning the yard and trying to fix a fence. A wire sprang loose and cut me right across my eye and damaged it.

I immediately went to the Delft Day Hospital. They gave me an ointment to apply, but that did not help. After a couple of days, I went to Tygerberg Hospital. They put me on strong antibiotics, but not even that helped, not even being on an antibiotic drip for 3 days.

When I went back to the doctors, they advised me that the eye will have to be removed. I was devastated. The next week I had the evisceration done. Dr Mohammed told me about the advantages of getting a prosthesis.

I actually also met another girl at the hospital who has an ocular prosthesis and I was amazed to see how natural it looked and got excited about the prospect of having an artificial eye.

The couple of months without an prosthesis was not a pleasant experience. People staring at you, but my children, husband and family got me through this by giving me their full support.

I’m very excited about my new eye and I can’t wait to see what my family would say.

I feel amazing and not afraid to go in public anymore.
