" I received a lens to fit over my eye at Tygerberg Hospital.I was involved with a fight through trying to stop some people from fighting, but my eye got hurt in the process. That was back in about 1988. The lens got damage through all the years of playing rugby. The doctor at Tygerberg Hospital operated because the retina came loose.

I did not receive another lens and since then I have just walked with the “damage eye”, always covering it up.I received a disability grand from the government, because I could not get work due to my facial appearance.

3 years ago I heard about the artificial eye program at the Ravensmead clinic. It took some time for me to get the courage to go, but I finally made the appointment at Tygerberg Hospital. Danie examined my socket and gave me the Metro District Health Services Eye Prosthesis Application Screening Form.

I had it completed at the Ravenmead Community Health Clinic and phoned for appointment. I went to the Bellville surgery. There were other people with similar circumstance. It took the whole day until about 16H00, but it was definitely worth it! It is very comfortable to wear, and I feel better. I also feel much more confident to go and apply for work, due to my facial appearance being normal.

Thank you to Danie and his team!"
